Our mission & strategies

Our mission & strategies

CABI's mission is to improve people's lives worldwide by providing information and applying expertise to solve problems in agriculture and the environment.

We achieve our mission by:

  • Creating, managing, curating and disseminating information
  • Putting know-how in people's hands
  • Improving food security through climate smart agriculture and good agricultural practices
  • Helping farmers to trade more of what they sow
  • Supporting farmers by increasing their capacity to grow better quality crops, and fight pests and diseases
  • Bringing science from the lab to the field
  • Protecting livelihoods and biodiversity from invasive species and other threats
  • Combating threats to agriculture and the environment

Sustainable Development Goals

We are committed to playing our part in helping the world reach Sustainable Development Goals. Here we outline areas of focus where we believe we can make significant contributions to improving lives across the globe.

In these videos on the CABI YouTube channel, CABI board members Akhter Mateen (SDG1: No Poverty), Professor Ruth Oniang'o (SDG2: Zero Hunger), Roger Horton (SD4: Quality Education), Professor Dame Anne Glover (SDG12: Responsible Comsumption and Production), Dr Prem Warrior (SDG15: Life on Land) and Paulus Verschuren (SDG17: Partnerships for the Goals) explain how CABI is delivering on the SDGs.

We are committed to sharing knowledge

Knowledge is the application of information, augmented by experience. Knowledge enables people to support themselves and improve their lives when it is communicated effectively.

We view partnerships as key to success

Through local, national and international partnerships we can disseminate knowledge with greater reach, impact and scale.

We care about people

We use our skills to help people around the world - from smallholder farmers in developing countries to researchers and academics. We focus on the uptake and application of knowledge.

We believe in long term solutions

We work with people and partners, in-country, to develop enduring solutions and build skills. We build lasting, value-creating relationships with our customers and stakeholders.

We are objective and impartial

We will not allow what we say to be influenced by political or commercial considerations. We work with partners including governments to help people. The information we provide is high quality, evidence-based, relevant and reliable.

CABI's medium term strategy

CABI has created a new medium term strategy to guide its direction from 2017 until 2019. The main paper provides the key top-level strategy, with Appendices providing more detailed thematic strategies and logframes to support monitoring and evaluation.

Medium term strategy

CABI's science strategy

The CABI science strategy outlines CABI’s strategic objectives and priority research areas to support the delivery of CABI's medium term strategy. It provides a medium-term context for shorter-term decisions and to guide programme and project development, planning and resource allocation.

CABI's project and programme gender strategy

The project and programme gender strategy focuses specifically on CABI’s development projects and research, and provides guidelines on mainstreaming gender considerations throughout the project cycle. It has been prepared following a review of the gender policies, strategies, and resources of CABI’s key donors, and reflects current international best practice in gender mainstreaming. Plantwise has a separate programme-level gender strategy which gives more detailed guidance specific to the programme.

CABI's workplace gender strategy

This workplace gender strategy aims to ensure a workplace that is free from discrimination from gender bias and to provide a working environment in which all employees can realise their full potential and contribute to business success.

CABI's monitoring and evaluation strategy

The CABI monitoring and evaluation strategy sets out CABI’s approach to M&E based on the strong foundations already in place within the organisation to measure and optimise the results of interventions, ensure relevance and efficiency in the implementation and to learn what works, what doesn’t and why in a particular context.
