Chapter 7 (Page no: 157)

European integration and the political economy of Central and Eastern European agricultural price and trade policy.

The results of an analysis of agricultural price and trade policies in Central and Eastern European countries since economic and political liberalization are summarized. The analysis includes both the level and mechanism of government intervention policy in the agrofood complex and investigates the perspective of endogenous political economic theory and European Union accession. The results suggest that governments adjust agricultural policies in response to changes in relative income, policy distortions and economic structural changes which affect the political costs and benefits of agricultural protection for the government.
