World trade and concerns for the human environment.

This chapter examines some of the main areas of contention in regard to the World Trade Organization (WTO) as the primary regime regulating global trade. The following issues are discussed: the compatibility of environmental protection with WTO rules; biosafety and the transboundary movement of genetically modified organisms; transparency and participation in the WTO; biodiversity, genetic resources, traditional knowledge and intellectual property rights; and the environmental implications of pervasive subsidies.
