Canada.

This chapter examines the relationship between agricultural production and the protection of environmental values in Canada. It begins with an overview of the main features of agricultural production, trade, and domestic agricultural policies. It then presents an overview of the most important environmental issues that have been linked to agriculture in the country. This is followed by a description of the institutional framework which regulates environmental aspects of Canadian agriculture. The penultimate section of the chapter presents a synopsis of the available estimates of the environmental compliance costs faced by Canadian farmers. The information presented in this chapter illustrates the need to understand the variability in intensity of environmental problems attributable to agriculture across the major agricultural trading partners. It also documents the complexity of domestic institutional responses to environmental problems.
