Chapter 9 (Page no: 285)

Environmental standards in developing countries.

This chapter offers an overview of the political and legal debate on environmental standards, including an analysis of the treatment of standards under the World Trade Organization (WTO). It then analyses and compares environmental legislation on vegetable oils (soyabean, rapeseed and palm oil), grain (maize, barley and wheat) and broilers in Brazil, Germany and Indonesia. Of special interest is the question to what extent environmental standards affect total production and processing costs, and thus international competitiveness. The chapter then considers to what extent standards are transferable from one country to other countries, as well as its implications for WTO actions.
