In search of the true tree: guidelines for classification.

The central goal in cycad systematics is to uncover the 'true tree' that correctly represents the hierarchy of relationships within the Cycadales. Consensus reached at the Cycad Classification Concepts Workshop in Miami in April 2002 is that the cycads are a monophyletic group, that a species is the smallest practical unit which should be used at the present time, that species descriptions should be field-based with as wide a suite of characters as possible and that taxonomic descriptions of the highest standard are essential to avoid past deficiencies in the literature. The identification of facilities, the sharing of resources and a vigorous interaction between all cycad systematics will collectively facilitate progress towards the 'true tree'. Data in this respect are presented in the form of a number of schedules.
