Comparing consumer responses towards GM foods in Japan and Norway.

This paper reports a willingness-to-pay study comparing consumer responses towards genetically modified (GM) foods by consumers in Japan and Norway. This study was based on 400 personal interviews in both Japan and Norway. Contingent valuation questions were included in the survey. The food products were bread and noodles. It was found that 39% of consumers in Norway were willing to purchase GM food at a discount, but in Japan only 20% indicated that they would purchase GM foods at a discount. The mean discount for GM food purchase was 60% in Japan and 50% in Norway.
