Chapter 9 (Page no: 153)

Leisure participation and time-use surveys: Japan.

This chapter contrasts the trends in leisure participation in Japan during the 1980s (a period of high economic growth) and the 1990s (a period of relative economic stagnation). It is revealed that some activities grew in popularity in the 1980s and declined in the 1990s, while others did the opposite. Some grew throughout the two decades, while others declined throughout. Still, others showed no significant change over the whole period. The chapter also discusses the government's policy on leisure, as well as the social inequality in free time in Japan.
