Alternatives to traditional annual crop agriculture in the uplands - biophysical evidence from the Manupali River Watershed.

Results are presented of field experiments during 1998-2003 in the Manupali River Watershed (Mindanao, Philippines) designed to evaluate tree-based (Eucalyptus grandis) and improved fallow (sunflower and Tithonia diversifolia) production systems with annual crops (tomato, maize, beans [Phaseolus] or cabbage) to determine the effectiveness of such systems to minimize soil erosion and enhance land productivity. The treatments consisted of (i) sunflower rotation for 7 seasons then reverting to cropping, (ii) trees alone, (iii) trees with lime application (2 t/ha) and annual crops for 5 seasons, (iv) annual crops with lime, and (v) annual crops without lime. Both sunflower and trees alone were effective in minimizing tillage-induced and water-related soil loss until the natural vegetation was allowed to grow once cropping was stopped. Tillage-induced erosion was the greatest source of erosion over the study period, with the exception of a few intense rainstorms which resulted in substantial soil losses. After rotation with sunflower, soil pH, N, C and Mg2+ were all raised, and annual crop yields were greater than on fields with no rotation or liming (a practice that is common on local farms). Yields of annual crops with lime were mostly higher than those without, but, if planted with trees, yields of annual crops were reduced to zero by the fourth cropping season. The data provide a basis for an understanding of tree species interactions and fallow systems with annual crops, and their effects on soil nutrients. The results suggest that development of tree-annual crop production and management strategies could be a key component in the design of sustainable steepland annual crop production systems.
