International trade and policies for genetically modified products.

Book cover for International trade and policies for genetically modified products.

Description

This book addresses international trade and policy issues concerning agricultural biotechnology. The 16 chapters in this volume are edited and revised versions of papers presented at the 8th International Conference of the International Consortium on Agricultural Biotechnology Research, held in Ravello, Italy, on 8-11 July 2004. Part I includes four chapters with an analytical focus. They deal wit...

Chapter 15 (Page no: 175)

Opposition to genetically modified wheat and global food security.

This chapter evaluates the impact of consumer opposition (particularly European opposition) to the adoption of GM food (GM wheat) and to the realization of its benefits in terms of global food security. The chapter (i) develops a conceptual model of consumer acceptance of GM crops; (ii) quantifies the effects of GM crop resistance on adoption rates of GM crops; and (iii) evaluates the effects of GM crop resistance under projected climate change scenarios on global food security. The most important finding of this study is that opposition to GM wheat could exacerbate global food security (measured by price, availability, consumption and ending stocks). The magnitudes of these losses are directly related to the degree of EU opposition to GM wheat.
