Taxonomy, identification, genetic relationships and distribution of large Heracleum species in Europe.

This chapter aims to place giant hogweed, Heracleum mantegazzianum, into a wider generic context in terms of taxonomy, genetic relationships with related taxa and distribution in both its native and invaded ranges. A brief excursion into past botanical investigations which were carried out in the Caucasus and adjacent regions of Asia and resulted in the description of the invasive Heracleum species in Europe, is also presented. The history of the introduction of Heracleum species is reviewed and the current distributions of the three major invasive representatives in Europe are compared. This chapter provides a taxonomic treatment for Nordic countries, which constitute an area of northeastern Europe where the distribution ranges of two major invasive species meet.
