The use and application of biochemical and molecular markers in aquaculture are covered in this chapter. The markers and techniques given focus in this chapter are isoenzymes and enzymes, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), random amplified polymorphic DNA, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), microsatellites, expressed sequence tags (ESTs) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). The relative effectiveness of these markers is discussed. Moreover, the relative costs of the different markers are presented.
