Chapter 5 (Page no: 68)

CIMMYT. Assessing the impact of natural resource management research: the case of zero tillage in India's rice-wheat systems.

This chapter reviews and synthesizes the experience with zero tillage (ZT) in the irrigated Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) of India so as to better understand and document the impact of this technology and related research. It first introduces the ZT technology in the context of India's rice-wheat systems, including a brief historic overview of the related R&D. Succeeding sections look into ZT adoption, review the farm-level impacts of ZT, estimate the welfare impacts, and reviews the environmental impacts. It is shown that ZT offers high potential economic, environmental and social gains in the Indian IGP. Nonetheless, significant challenges remain, not least in terms of actually realizing these potential gains on the ground.
