Introduction and the AIGM research project.

As a sequel to a series of workshops organized by the European Science Foundation programme Assessment of the Impacts of Genetically Modified Plants (AIGM), this conference aimed at exploring the ecological and evolutionary effects of the introduction of transgenes into wild relatives of crops, by integrating and discussing current knowledge on crop-wild relative hybridization, introgression and measuring and predicting its consequences, and by identifying areas that needed further elaboration. Of particular importance was the need to discuss methods for determining the consequences of gene introgression in relation to the Monitoring guidance notes that accompany the requirement in the EC Directive 2001/18 for monitoring of the post-commercialization impacts of GM crops.
