Principles of seed production.

This chapter discusses pollination and fertilization in vegetable seed crops; the use of insects (with Hymenoptera and Diptera as the two most important insect orders concerned with the pollination of vegetable seed crops) to increase seed yield; the problems identified with the very important and essential pollinating insects (hive and wild bees); plant breeding in relation to vegetable seed production; genetically modified crops; and the importance of available water during flowering and seed development, as well as to the mother plant and mother plant nutrition.
