This chapter focuses on the different seed production areas and their selection based on agroclimatic factors and soil requirements. The seed producer's commitment to seed production in order to achieve a high quality seed lot coupled with high yield without unnecessary inputs or expenditure are discussed. The importance of crop planning, knowledge of the previous crop, weeds and their effects on quality of the harvested seed lot, site preparation, seed crop production and maintenance of cultivar purity during seed production are highlighted. Some potential sources of contamination from transgenic plants are given and zoning schemes intended to control the species to be grown either for market or as seed crops are pointed out. The importance of cultivar maintenance, organic seed production, pest and disease control and pre-sowing seed treatments are also presented.
