Leguminosae - temperate and tropical forage legumes.

This chapter documents the origins and cultivar types, crop establishment and management, harvesting, roguing, seed production, processing and storage, as well as pathogens and pests of temperate and tropical forage legumes. The clover species suitable for temperate regions include: Trifolium repens, T. pratense, T. hybridum, T. fragiferum, T. alexandrinum, T. incarnatum, T. resupinatum, T. semipilosum, T. vesiculosum and T. subterraneum, and non-clover such as Medicago sativa, Onobrychis viciifolia and Ornithopus sativus. The forage legumes for warm climates are generally cultivated in North America and the Mediterranean area. These are Lespedeza stipulacea, Melilotus spp. and Lotus spp. A list of forage crops cultivated both in the tropics and subtropics is also provided.
