Chapter 6 (Page no: 109)

The agri-food supply chain.

This chapter discusses the Serbian food chain, starting at the consumer level and moving up the chain all the way to the suppliers of farmers. The analysis presents key indicators of structure and performance to evaluate the agri-food supply chain's strengths, in a comparative analysis with benchmark countries having similar supply chain structures, such as Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland, and also making the comparison with the EU27 average. The sections in this chapter analyse in turn the food consumption patterns, food retailing and wholesaling, food processing, primary agriculture and, finally, input suppliers. Structural features of the Serbian agri-food chain have implications for institutional arrangements in the field of agricultural production and trade. This chapter concludes with a section on how these linkages between farmers, processors, traders and the retail sector can be characterized in Serbia.
