CABI Book Chapter

Plant mutation breeding and biotechnology.

Book cover for Plant mutation breeding and biotechnology.

This book presents contemporary information on mutagenesis in plants and its applications in plant breeding and research. The topics are classified into sections focusing on the concepts, historical development and genetic basis of plant mutation breeding (chapters 1-6); mutagens and induced mutagenesis (chapters 7-13); mutation induction and mutant development (chapters 14-23); mutation breeding ...

Chapter 2 (Page no: 21)

A brief history of plant mutagenesis.

In this chapter, the history of plant mutation research and application to breeding is presented. The historical background, the important discoveries, and the major events that happened in the first half of the 20th century are described. An overview of mutation induction experiments and establishment of mutation induction techniques (physical mutagenesis, chemical mutagenesis, and mutant generation through biotechnology) is included.
