Chapter 12 (Page no: 140)

The cultural tourism sustainability mix applied to the development of contemplative tourism in Limburg, the Netherlands.

This chapter uses the context of the Roman Catholic tradition within the province of Limburg (Netherlands) to demonstrate how a religious site and its buildings can be utilized as a niche cultural tourist product. The chapter highlights the complexity of managing a site that is primarily focused on prayer and worship with the aim of developing so-called contemplative tourism. The conceptual framework of the cultural tourism sustainability mix is applied to demonstrate how (in theory) it is possible to visualize a balance between the preservation of cultural resources with the expectations of contemplative tourists who are seeking an authentic experience in their interaction with the host community. In reality this form of cultural tourism places an obligation on tourists to have sensitivity towards cultural sites that are designed for worship and prayer.
