Chapter 14 (Page no: 163)

Managing heritage and cultural tourism resources in Dubrovnik.

This chapter focuses on the UNESCO World Heritage city of Dubrovnik (Croatia) as an example of an urban cultural tourism development. In promoting the application of a sustainable development model for the better management of cultural sites, incorporating the views of local people is advocated. It is reported that the major challenge for city authorities in preserving and managing historical sites within the Old City is a lack of appropriate funding; however, networks of cultural and tourism institutions are emerging to interpret and present the cultural heritage of the Old City. It is suggested in this instance that seasonality of tourism demand is a further challenge for the city authorities in creating a sustainable cultural tourism product, as is the over-emphasis on city centre sites to the neglect of more peripheral cultural elements.
