Lysine metabolism.

Lysine is an essential amino acid for growth, development and reproduction in animals and its status as the first-limiting amino acid in cereals is unequivocal. Consequently, there is continuing interest in its metabolism in higher plants. The pathway from which lysine is synthesized is now well established, although advances continue to appear in publications. The major site of regulation appears to be at the enzyme dihydrodipicolinate synthase. There is also strong evidence for the important role of the enzymes involved in lysine catabolism (specifically, in the seed) for the accumulation of this amino acid, and the major advances in lysine metabolism made in more recent years have been made in lysine catabolism. This chapter will cover the study and analysis of mutants and transgenic plants that over-accumulate lysine. A lot of what has been learned about the regulation of lysine metabolism has been obtained from the study of mutants and applied to the production of transgenic plants. The study of such plants also allows an understanding of the emerging concepts on the biosynthesis and catabolism of this key amino acid.
