Histidine.

Histidine (His) is a proteinogenic amino acid, and is thus critical for plant growth and development. The chemical properties of the imidazole side group of His allow this amino acid to participate in acid-base catalysis and in the coordination of metal ions, including zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni). Despite the biological importance of His, this was the last amino acid biosynthetic pathway to be characterized in plants, and a number of important questions remain concerning it. While the eight enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of His have now been identified, the metabolic route by which His catabolism occurs in plants remains unknown. ATP-phosphoribosyl transferase, which catalyses the first reaction in the pathway, has been shown to play an important role in the regulation of His biosynthesis, yet we still know little about the transcriptional regulation of the His biosynthetic genes, nor do we understand how the synthesis of this amino acid is integrated with other metabolic demands in plants.
