Quantifying agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and identifying cost-effective mitigation measures.

The chapter provides a brief explanation of how and why GHG emissions arise in agricultural supply chains, describes the methods available for estimating emissions - both on the farm and beyond the farm gate - and summarizes existing studies of GHG emissions in food supply chains. It then explains the role of cost-effectiveness in identifying appropriate mitigation measures and discusses some of the challenges and limitations that remain. It also describes the application of some models, tools and schemes that have been developed for assessing the impact of agricultural practices and policies on the environment.
