CABI Book Chapter
Parthenium weed: biology, ecology and management.
Description
This book has been a collective effort by 26 members of the International Parthenium Weed Network, which is an International network of expert volunteers devoted to creating awareness about the parthenium weed (
Parthenium hysterophorus) threat, and to sharing information on how to reduce its adverse impacts upon agro-ecosystems, the environment and human health. The book builds on a fundamental un...
Chapter 15 (Page no: 287)
History and management - East and North Africa, and the Middle East.
This chapter outline the history of invasions, background, spread and management (using physical, chemical, biological, cultural, and utilization strategies) of parthenium weed (
Parthenium hysterophorus) in East and North Africa, and the Middle East. The future of the parthenium weed invasion in these countries is currently at a crossroads. While there is presently heightened awareness throughout most of the region, due to international programmes such as the RBIPMA ('Removing Barriers to Invasive Plant Management in Africa') and USAID IPM-CRSP (United States Agency for International Development under the Integrated Pest Management Collaborative Research Support Programme) projects, there need to be permanent, coordinated management resolutions made for not only parthenium weed but all invasive plants.
