Chapter 5 (Page no: 296)
Diseases caused by bacteria and phytoplasmas.
This chapter describes diseases of banana (
Musa and
Ensete), caused by bacteria and phytoplasmas. Information is given on their economic impact, distribution, symptoms, causal agent(s), disease cycle and epidemiology (e.g. insect vector and mechanical transmission), host reaction, and control using different methods such as cultural, chemical, biological, quarantine and other control methods (use of resistant cultivars and integrated management). In general, bacterial diseases of plants, once established, are difficult to control owing to the lack of an effective chemical or other curative treatment.
