Chapter 2 (Page no: 8)

What is the bioeconomy.

This chapter describes the bioeconomy as it is defined today in research and policy documents. The main characteristics of the various bioeconomy sectors, the relationships across sectors, and the related actors are described. The chapter also illustrates the main statistical evidence about the bioeconomy, with particular attention devoted to economically relevant parameters (e.g. contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) and employment). As the bioeconomy is not a traditional aggregate of economic statistics, there are problems with data availability; this issue is also highlighted together with the efforts being made to improve the availability of statistical information. Also presented is an overview of country-level bioeconomy strategies and policies. The annex to this chapter details the configuration of the bioeconomy in selected countries.
