Quarantine nurseries.

Although Indonesia is the largest grower of oil palm, other countries are also significant producers. Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Costa Rica and Thailand are the next biggest oil palm seed producers. Due to this competition, some Indonesian plantation companies import oil palm germinated seeds from foreign producers. In addition, in order to widen the oil palm germplasm, especially for breeding purposes, countries engage in exchange or collection consortia and this can involve not only different countries, but also different continents, e.g. Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. One consequence of such import programmes is that each recipient of foreign germplasm must adhere to quarantine regulations, which are set up to protect the local species and commercial plantations by preventing the introduction of foreign pests and diseases. The regulations are usually issued and monitored by national governmental bodies, such as the Ministry of Agriculture, with inspections conducted by official quarantine agencies. Rules, regulations and processes vary from country to country. Here we give those that apply to Indonesia.
