Principles of forest biotechnology.

This chapter describes the principles of forest biotechnology. To genetically engineer a tree, a single, transformed cell must be regenerated into a whole plant. Agrobacterium tumefaciens is commonly used as a vehicle to transform (introduce genetic material) into the chromosome of a plant cell, but other approaches, such as biolistics, are available. The two general approaches to regenerating a plant are organogenesis and embryogenesis. The latter is the preferred route but has only been accomplished with a limited number of tree species, and is a labour-intensive and time-consuming process.
