Chapter 9 (Page no: 179)

Diseases and nematodes.

Cucurbits suffer from many diseases that are caused by bacteria, fungi (and oomycetes), nematodes, viruses and phytoplasmas. Disease pathogens attack cucurbits at every stage of development, from damping off at the beginning of germination to postharvest fruit rots. Reliable fruit yield and quality of cucurbits is dependent on adequate pathogen control. This chapter describes bacterial and phytoplasma, fungal and oomycete, and viral diseases, as well as nematode pests, of cucurbits. Some measures to control them, including cultural, chemical and host resistance, are also discussed.
