This book aims to provide an overview of insect pest management, highlighting the major problem areas and contentious issues and, where possible, attempting to identify promising lines and directions for future research and implementation. The book includes descriptions and explanations of the different control measures and their use, categorized as insecticides, host plant resistance, biological control, cultural control and interference methods, and quarantine legislation. In addition, there are chapters on sampling, monitoring and forecasting, yield loss assessment, programme design, management and implementation. The introduction provides a brief history of pest management, the causes of pest outbreaks and an overview of the different stakeholders involved in pest management. The final chapter addresses the driving forces that are shaping the future of IPM, including three examples of working IPM systems.
