Chapter 5 (Page no: 103)

Host plant resistance.

This chapter deals with host plant resistance to pests, discussing the genetics of virulence and resistance, resistance evaluation, breeding methods and new plant breeding techniques. The potential of host plant resistance as a means of managing insect pests has always been considered fundamental within an overall pest management strategy. In practice, however, it has rarely lived up to its potential. Despite the emphasis on the identification of mechanisms of resistance to insect pests, relatively few cultivars have been produced that are resistant to insects. The introduction of the latest plant-breeding methods offers a whole suite of new options for developing resistant crop plants, and although not all techniques have yet produced and deployed insect resistance, this is largely only a matter of time and prioritization.
