Our world expert scientists provide training in molecular identification of microorganisms, morphological identification of fungi, microbial techniques, isolation methods for fungi and bacteria, plant pathology, biological control and preservation of microorganisms.

The course provides expert tuition and practical demonstrations in culture preservation, maintenance and culture collection management. These methods comply with quality standards set by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development) for best practice with biological resource collections.  


This course will include advice on the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol and will be of interest to anyone involved in the handling, distribution and storage of microorganisms.


Participants will receive:

  • a comprehensive course manual
  • powerpoint lecture material all provided on a memory stick

The programme

The three-day programme includes lectures and practical demonstrations of techniques. Lectures and workshops will provide participants with opportunities to discuss aspects of their work with tutors and other course participants and to update their skills and knowledge.

Day 1:
  • Why do we need Culture Collections? History and perspective
  • Isolation methods for fungi and bacteria
  • How to maintain cultures using basic techniques
  • Principles and theory of freeze-drying; centrifugal & shelf methods
  • Freeze drying lab sessions
Day 2:
  • Principals of cryopreservation
  • Development of novel cryopreservation techniques
  • How to select an appropriate preservation method
  • Collections as resources for genomic R & D
  • How to study cultures using biochemical and molecular techniques
Day 3:
  • Storage of DNA extracts
  • Assessing success, stability and optimising preservation techniques
  • Culture Collection quality management and best practice
  • Culture Collection information systems demonstration
  • Data storage & specimen tracking: demonstration
  • Safe transport of biological materials & packaging demonstration
  • Biosecurity
  • Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol
